We knew the Church of Scientology was too boring to be true. Just kidding! They wear their craziness like Rihanna wears a new fabulous wig. According this week’s New Yorker, Tom Cruise used Scientologists for free labor; allegations also include human trafficking, which the article claims the FBI is currently investigating. The article, based on interviews with Million Dollar Baby director Paul Haggis, alleges that Cruise and church leader David Miscavige employeed volunteers or poorly paid workers to do manual labor, including detailing their many cars and motorcycles and repairing airplane hangers. “I was getting paid fifty dollars a week,” says John Brousseau, a former Scientologist who worked for Cruise. “And I’m supposed to be working for the betterment of mankind.” Another Scientology member was sent to boot camp after botching a project for Cruise. “I got busted,” the member claimed. “I f—ed up on Tom Cruise’s lines.” Umm…are we going to be sent to a boot camp just for reading this article? Shhh, no one tell them!
Eventually Haggis left Scientology for their anti-gay rights stance on Prop. 8, though apparently not when they told him he would get “enhanced abilities,” i.e. healing powers like John Travolta. “I was in a cult for thirty-four years. Everyone else could see it,” Haggis says now. “I don’t know why I couldn’t.” The Church is denying all of the allegations, and AOL News reports the FBI investigation has been closed. “The New Yorker was well aware the Church knew nothing of the investigation but had refuted the same claims based on a case already thrown out by a Federal Court Judge,” a Church rep says. We’re sure Tom Cruise has his thetans in a twist over this one. Better send him on another couch-pounding PR junket; that’ll convince everyone they’re all completely normal!
