At least five people have been killed and 44 were injured when an earth quake measured 6.8 on Richter scale struck various parts of Nepal including the capital city of Kathmandu on Sunday around 6:25 p.m, the home ministry said.
Three pedestrians were killed when a section of the British embassy compound wall at Lainchaur, Kathmandu fell on them due to the tremor measured 6.8 on Richter scale.
Those killed have been identified as Sajan Shrestha, 36, and his eight-year-old daughter Anisha of Ghumchaur-6, Gorkha and one other Bir Bahadur Majhi, according to police inspector Dan Bahadur Thapa, chief of Metropolitan Police Range, Sohrakhutte.
The father-daughter two were on a scooter when the wall along the Kapur Dhara Marg, collapsed. The two along with Majhi, whose age and address is not known as yet, breathed their last while undergoing treatment at Man Mohan Hospital.
Similarly, according to our correspondent Amar Khadka two persons were killed in Dharan in the earthquake whose epicenter is said to lie along the eastern Nepal-India border. 20-year-old Santosh Pariyar and his six-year-old Kamal Pariyar died when the wall of their house collapsed, District Police Office Sunsari informed.
Pariyar permanent residents of Kuntadevi-5, Okhaldhunga were living in a rented house at Dharan-13.
The earthquake destroyed around 58 houses across the nation with 10 in the capital, the statement issued by the ministry added.
People panicked with the tremor ran out of their homes, offices and marketplaces to the streets and open spaces fearing the worse.
Several others including seven in Kathmandu have been injured after the panic-stricken people jumped off their houses, hotels and shopping buildings.
India TV channels have also reported that nine people were killed in Sikkim.
The earthquake has also affected other parts of India including the capital Delhi.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the earthquake affected various parts of Terai region including Sarlahi, Bara, Birgunj and Paras. No casualties have been reported in those districts, the report said.
Similarly, no human casualties have been reported in Banepa.
